A student level clarinet is a great way to start a musical journey and a Step-Up clarinet will take a player even further.
Meyer Music is an authorized dealer of high-end clarinet brands, including Yamaha, Buffet, and Backun. As Michigan’s only Shokunin Yamaha dealer, their premier level, we also provide access to a wide range of advanced Yamaha options.
What is the difference?

Student Clarinets are made of resin, making them lighter, more durable, and more affordable.
Step-Up Clarinets feature black Grenadilla wood elements to boost projection and create a richer, darker sound.
Student Clarinets have a smaller bore, making them easier for beginners to play.
Step-Up Clarinets feature a larger bore for a fuller sound and may include raised tone holes and enhanced bell and barrel to help shape tone.
Student Clarinets include a basic student-level mouthpiece.
Step-Up Clarinets feature a higher level mouthpiece, providing a better initial “voice”.
Student Clarinets have standard components needed for solid and reliable performance.
Step-Up Clarinets have additional features such as leather pads and needle springs for increased response and speed as well as thicker, stronger silver keywork plating and ergonomic key design to improve technical efficiency.

We offer intermediate-level clarinets at all of our locations and our staff would be delighted to help your student try them out.
While no appointment is needed, feel free to let us know you’re planning to come in and we’ll ensure everything is ready for your visit.
For upper-level advancing students we also offer consultations with our clarinet specialist, Lauren Cerka, who is available for consultation appointments during which she can answer your questions, guide you through test-playing, and advise on the technical elements of the instruments. Lauren attended Eastern Michigan University and studied Music Education as a clarinet principal. She has multiple years of experience in both clarinet and saxophone performance, and is an active member of multiple community ensembles including the Kalamazoo Concert Band and River Cities Concert Band. Lauren is looking forward to helping your student step up to their next clarinet!

Step-Up School Event
Many schools that work with Meyer Music have an annual Step-Up instrument event. Contact your teacher to see if there’s an event planned for your student’s classroom.
At-School Individual Trial
If your school doesn’t have a Step-Up event, we can arrange for a Step-Up clarinet to be sent to your school for your student to try.

Current Meyer Renters
In-Person:
Visit a Meyer location to complete the step-up exchange in-person.
Online:
Complete the following form and we will exchange your student’s current clarinet for the selected Step-Up model on our next visit to your school.
If it’s the summer months (or they’re too excited to wait!) please visit a Meyer location to exchange in-person.
