Starting a musical journey with a reliable, quality instrument is the key to a successful experience. Meyer Music offers brand-name student level flutes as rent-to-own, matching teacher preferences with accessories included.
Step-Up Flutes
As a player progresses, their instrument should match their growing skills. A student-level flute is a great way to start a musical journey and a Step-Up flute will take a player even further.
Meyer Music is an authorized dealer of high-end flute brands, including Yamaha, Trevor James, Haynes, and Azumi. As Michigan’s only Shokunin Yamaha dealer, their premier level, we also provide access to a wide range of advanced Yamaha options. Yamaha and Trevor James piccolos are also available.
What is the difference?
MaterialKeysFeatures
Student flutes are made of nickel plated in silver, designed for durability and affordability.
Step-Up flutes are made of a higher percentage of silver for a more nuanced, expressive tone. They may feature a solid silver headjoint and/or gold-plated lip plate for an elegant look.
Student flutes have closed-hole keys which are easier for beginners to use.
Step-Up flutes have open-hole keys which require better hand position leading to fluid technique. Step-Up flutes include a low B key which adds length to the flute and slightly darkens the sound and may also have a “gizmo” key to facilitate the 4th octave C.
Student flutes have standard components needed for solid and reliable performance.
Step-Up flutes may also include a split E mechanism, C# trill key, and pointed key arms.
Experience the Sound
When your student would like to hear what the next level of flute sounds like:
Visit a Meyer Location
We offer intermediate-level flutes at all of our locations and our staff would be delighted to help your student try them out.
While no appointment is needed, feel free to let us know you’re planning to come in and we’ll ensure everything is ready for your visit.
For upper-level advancing students we also offer consultations with our flute specialist, Leslie Deppe, who is available for consultation appointments during which she can answer your questions, guide you through test-playing, and advise on the technical elements of the instruments. Leslie has a master’s degree in flute performance from MSU and is an active performer with the West Michigan Symphony and Battle Creek Symphony.
Join us for Step-Up Saturdays on Nov. 23 and Dec. 7, when our GR store will be open exclusively for step-up customers. Learn more and RSVP here
