Starting a musical journey with a reliable, quality instrument is the key to a successful experience. Meyer Music offers brand-name student-level oboes as rent-to-own, matching teacher preferences with accessories included.
Step-Up Oboes
As a player progresses, their instrument should match their growing skills. A student-level oboe is a great way to start a musical journey and a Step-Up oboe will take a player even further.
Meyer Music offers an array of high-end oboe brands, including Yamaha, Selmer, and Fox. As Michigan’s only Shokunin Yamaha dealer, their premier level, we also provide access to a wide range of advanced Yamaha options.
What is the difference?
MaterialKey SystemFeaturesDesign
Student oboes are made of resin, making them lighter, more durable, and more affordable.
Step-Up oboes feature black Grenadilla wood elements to boost projection and create a richer, darker sound.
Student oboes feature a pared down keywork system, designed for beginners.
Step-Up oboes feature a “modified conservatory key system” with additional keys: the left hand F, an F resonance key, an articulated B-C# mechanism, and low Bb key.
Student oboes have standard components needed for solid and reliable performance.
Step-Up oboes feature smaller tone holes which allow sound pressure to flow to the end of the oboe, creating its unique tone.
Student oboes are specifically designed for beginners to build foundational skills while Step-Up oboes are designed for intermediate players to play through their high school years.
Experience the Sound
When your student would like to hear what the next level of oboe sounds like:
Visit a Meyer Location
We offer intermediate-level oboes at all of our locations and our staff would be delighted to help your student try them out.
While no appointment is needed, feel free to let us know you’re planning to come in and we’ll ensure everything is ready for your visit.
For upper-level advancing students we also offer consultations with our oboe specialist, Sue Burel, who is available for consultation appointments during which she can answer your questions, guide you through test-playing, and advise on the technical elements of the instruments. Sue has over 45 years of experience playing oboe and has taught privately for over 30 years. Sue is looking forward to helping your student step up to their next oboe!
Join us for Step-Up Saturdays on Nov. 23 and Dec. 7, when our GR store will be open exclusively for step-up customers. Learn more and RSVP here
